Sticks and Stones Will Break Your Bones, But Names Will Never Hurt You

Posted on 04:45 by Unknown
By Murray Newlands, Director and Co-Founder, Monitoring Social Media

Who cares what people say about you? You do a great job for your customers, and people who know you professionally and personally know that you run an outstanding company, right?

Do you use Yelp? Why do you use it? Because what people say about you matters. Creating and managing an online reputation is an essential part of protecting your company's brand.

Here are some tips for creating and managing your brand:

Create social media profiles on LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter that include your company's name. Those social network websites rank well in Google, so when someone searches for your company, they see content that you have written and that you control. Secondly, if existing customers, potential customers, and press research your company they will see your online communities and recognize that you care enough about your customers to engage with them directly. (Note to self: Make sure these social media channels are active, otherwise it appears that you do not care to engage!)

Link from your company's website to your LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter profiles. Doing this helps to tell people where and how they can communicate with you. It also increases the likelihood of these sites ranking well on Google.

Engage with bloggers who blog about your company! Commenting on their blog posts, (thanking them, answering questions they may have raised, suggesting related products, etc.) can also create content that will show up when people are searching for your company.

Monitor what people are saying about your company. Staff, products and competitors can give you great insights into things you are doing well, things you are doing badly, and things that you can do and say differently. Suppose you do not know that people are calling your company names and no one tells you? How would you know you needed to do something about it? The simple way is to set up listening software, such as Google Alerts: www.google.com/alerts. This software program will email you a notice when someone mentions your name or company. Google Alerts is free and easy to use. It does, however, have its limitations. Increasingly, companies want more reliable and sophisticated monitoring solutions that will be capable of monitoring social media sites, like Twitter and Facebook, in real-time. Several companies provide those real-time solutions. They are: Brand Watch, Constant Contact, Radian 6, and Marchex.

Do you know who is calling you names right now? And if those negative comments will show up when people search for information about your company? Need help finding out more? Come to Monitoring Social Media (San Francisco) on October 21-22 and hear Pierre Zarokian speak on these very issues. You can also following the Twitter feeds of Murray Newlands: @murrynewlands or Pierre Zarokian @submitexpress.

Google Updates Search Engine Optimization Starter Guide

Posted on 04:43 by Unknown
In late September, Google released a new version of its Search Engine Optimization Starter Guide. The document is designed to give webmasters, website owners and online marketing professional who are just beginning to learn about search engine optimization tips and tricks for increasing the visibility of their site. While the guide admits that it "won't tell you any secrets that'll automatically rank your site first for queries in Google," it does offer many best practices that are valuable to SEO neophytes.

The new version of the Search Engine Optimization Starter Guide updates the document which was first made public two years ago after originally being developed as an internal guide. According to ZDNet, one of the major additions to the guide is a section called "SEO for Mobile Phones," which explains the importance of having a mobile version of your website and gives tips for how to construct an SEO-friendly site for mobile devices.

Google has also made the guide more user-friendly in this addition. There are more example images to help new users understand the concepts being described. There is also a glossary of frequently used SEO terms to help users acclimate themselves with the most common-used terms.

Bing Replaces Yahoo! as Number Two Search Engine

Posted on 04:42 by Unknown
Microsoft Bing reached a major milestone for usage in August, the same month it officially became the technology which powers the Yahoo! search engine. According to PC Magazine, the latest statistics from The Nielsen Company show that Bing surpassed Yahoo! for the first time in August to become the second most-used search engine in the United States.

Bing represented 13.9 percent of all domestic Internet searches in August, placing it ahead of Yahoo!'s 13.1 percent. Bing still is a distant second to industry leader Google, which represented a whopping 65.1 percent of all American Internet searches in August. However, the combined number of user-generated searches performed by Bing and Yahoo! in August would be 26 percent, according to a Nielsen blog post.

Bing is also showing tremendous growth. According to Nielsen, while Google's searches have grown by just one percent in the United States since August 2009, searches on Bing in the same time frame have risen by 30 percent.

Are Google Instant Changes Impacting Demand Media?

Posted on 04:41 by Unknown
Google Instant has also brought with it some apparent changes to the search engine algorithm used by the company. Fortune magazine editor Dan Primack has an interesting -- if completely unsubstantiated-- theory about what is happening. Primack told PC World that the algorithm changes might have been triggered by Google to drive traffic away from online content publisher Demand Media.

Demand Media announced its intention to file an Initial Public Offering last Friday. Since then, daily traffic for the company's related sites and articles have dropped from seven million page views each day to two million according to Quantcast. Hidden in the IPO's risk factors is possible direct competition from Google. Demand Media derives 25 percent of its revenue through cost-per-click keyword advertising through Searchzilla. In its IPO offering, Demand Media said that Google would have a competitive advantage if it decided to enter the content generation business.

What exactly is Demand Media's revenue stream? The PC World article sums it up neatly:

"Demand Media's business model calls for marshalling armies of creatives to produce articles, photos, and videos for its website. Demand Media uses an algorithm to identify hot trends on the Internet and steer its creatives to produce content for those trends. It creates revenue from keyword-related advertising tied to the content. And since the content is tied to hot trends, it collects top dollar from advertisers hungry to tap into those trends."

Many observers believe that the changes to Google's search algorithm reward quality over quantity, a change which could limit the efforts of Demand Media along with impact how SEO firms create optimized content. Primack told PC World that Google's changes and their impact on Demand Media might not be a coincidence.

"The massive drop-off occurred a few days prior to the IPO filing, and has stayed consistent over the past two days of Quantcast reports," he said. "It certainly could be an error the fall is not mirrored by indirect traffic analytics groups Compete or Alexa but let me offer an alternate (and unsubstantiated) theory: Google changed something in its search algorithm to lower the demand for Demand."

5 Simple Tips To Link Building Methods

Posted on 04:26 by Unknown
When it comes to SEO, increasing your inbound links is one of the most effective ways to improve your ranking. If you’ve recently launched a new website, or are looking for some advice to get started – here are 5 simple (but effective) link building methods.
1. Internal Linking
One of the easiest methods simply involves linking to relevant pages from other pages on your website. By using content based links, you can control the anchor text of each link to ensure you get the maximum SEO benefit.

2. Directory Submission
Submitting your website to free online directories doesn’t take much time and can be a very effective way to increase your inbound links. Many directories also allow you to write your own title and description which is another chance to include relevant anchor text.
3. Social Media Links
Bookmarking your website across some popular social media sites is another way to ensure you receive a keyword based incoming link. To get you started, here’s a list of some of the more popular sites:
4. Article Distribution
Writing informative articles and distributing them online is another powerful link building tactic. Write original articles, keep them to around 500 words and submit them to popular sites like www.ezinearticles.com and www.articlebase.com.
5. Start Writing a Blog
Setup a blog using WordPress or Blogger and get into the habit if writing one new post per week. Make sure to link to your website using targeted anchor text where possible. Aside from the direct linking benefit, your blog posts might also get syndicated on other sites which will create another incoming link.
If you want to build more incoming links but don’t have the time, you can also consider our new link building service which can help to improve your ranking. To get started, visit our link building page here.

Google Rolling Out Real-time Search Results

Posted on 04:24 by Unknown
It’s pretty safe to say that the buzz throughout the latter half of 2009 surrounded real-time search.
With Google rolling out real-time search results into its regular results page in early December, there is now even greater opportunity to get more exposure for your business.
So, how can you get found in real-time searches?
It’s all about Twitter & Facebook, so here are some tips that will get you on the right track:
  • Get social: Join the social media world by opening up Facebook and Twitter accounts for a start. You can make use of social media features in customizing the URL and make sure your profiles are public so that the search engines can find them.
  • Keyword, keywords, keywords: This seems obvious, but use keywords in not only your content, but in your titles, and your updates. If you’re writing an article, you have to consider what people are going to include in their updates if they share it on a social network, whether this be Facebook, Twitter, or anything else. If someone searches for those keywords, they will be more likely to find your content in a real-time search. The same goes for your own Tweets/status updates.
  • Be Timely: Simply mentioning events that are current & relevant will put you directly into the results for any searches having to do with that topic, provided the right keywords are in play.
  • Get plenty of followers: If you have a lot of followers or friends on social networks, or even just readers of your blog, you are going to get more people sharing your content. The more people that share your content, the better chances it has of making it into real time searches. The key to getting new followers is to write good content which others will feel compelled to share.
  • Easy sharing: You need to make it easy for your content to be shared. Put links/buttons on your blog or website (or both!) that make it easy for you to be shared.
Hat tip to Chris Crum from WebProNews for some of the tips above.
The key to real-time search is to provide relevant and timely information to as many people as possible. Good luck!

SEO Guidelines

Posted on 04:18 by Unknown
What’s your resolution for 2010? If Google’s predicted correctly, there’s quite a few of you out there wanting to learn the truths and dispel the myths of SEO.
Accordingly, the search giant has unveiled the New Google SEO Resources for Beginners post. It’s aimed at helping those starting out in the world of SEO “disregard the rumors and know what’s important”.
The post potentially over simplifies SEO just a bit (it’s really a guide to the webmaster center), but its simple 4 step approach is sure to get people moving in the right direction. The 4 core areas that the guide covers are:

Step 1: Absorb the Basics
Essentially this is all about learning the theory behind SEO. Before you start tackling anything, including the development of your website, you should study up on the do’s and don’ts. Here is one of the sample videos that Google shares:

Step 2: Dig Deeper into the Details
Using the extensive help center, there’s plenty of information for those wanting to dig deeper than the beginner’s guides.
Access the Webmaster Help Center Here
Step 3: Verify Your Site in the Webmaster Area
Once you’re confident with your knowledge, it’s time to claim your website in the webmaster area and start working with the handy SEO tools and resources in there.

Step 4: Research Before You Do Anything
Make sure to check the consequences of doing anything drastic with your SEO. Whether you return to the help center or tap into the collective wisdom of the webmaster Forum, you’ll be sure to get good advice on any major strategies you’re planning to undertake.
While the guide is really just a clever way to educate people about the information and tools available in the webmaster center – it covers off the best approach to DIY SEO.
If you’re going to undertake the job of doing SEO yourself – then follow the steps
  1. Learn the basic >
  2. Study the Details >
  3. Equip yourself with the right tools >
  4. Always check before doing anything major

Advice To Improve The Google Ranking

Posted on 04:11 by Unknown
One of the best ways to start building your organic rankings is to target local search terms which are relevant for your business. Local search terms are usually made up of a generic keyword with the addition of a local modifier, for example
  • Cosmetic dentist hollywood
  • Plumber Palo Alto
  • Air Conditioning Melbourne
Below I’ve put together some basic advice on how to get started in achieving top Google rankings for local key phrases.
1. Include your physical business address on each page
If your business is located in the city or suburb you’re trying to rank for, including your address in the footer of each page is an easy way to show Google your site is relevant for this location.
This means that if the majority of the content on your website is about air conditioning with every page also mentioning Melbourne, Google will see your website as more relevant to the query air conditioning Melbourne.
2. Use your location in meta title tags
Adding the location you’re targeting to the title tag of various pages is another way to quickly improve your local rankings. Many site owners fall into the trap of using their business name or very broad keywords in title tags, when bringing this down to a local focus can have a dramatic impact on rankings in less competitive industries. Using the air conditioning Melbourne example, your title tag could look something like this:
Air Conditioning Installation in Melbourne – Company Name
3. Get listed in local directories
Getting listed in local directories will help build incoming links to your site which are closely related to your industry and location. Some of my favourite local U.S. sites are listed below:
  • http://www.yellowpages.com/
4. Claim your Google places listing
This is a great base to start with in building your local rankings. Claiming your listing tells search engines that they have the most up to date information about your business which will improve the relevance of your URL for local search phrases.
By following this checklist you should have a strong foundation for achieving ranking success for local key phrases.

A Quick Approach To first page of Google

Posted on 04:07 by Unknown
It’s no secret that everyone wants to be on the first page of Google, but with many different ways to achieve this – what’s the best solution for your business? If you deal with locally based customers from your town or city, there is a quick and easy ‘shortcut’ to get listed on the first page of Google!
This shortcut has to do with Google’s local business listings, which are often shown as the first result when customers search for your business category.

For example, if somebody from New York searches for “florist”, “florists”, or something more targeted like “florist new york” Google can show a 10-pack of local business results deemed most relevant to the query.
Just take a look at the search results below:
florist-results
You’ll notice that these local business results are listed as the number 1 Google result above even the regular organic listings!
In many ways, these listings are even better than regular listings because users get more than just a link to your website. They also get your phone number, a map of your location and an additional link to find out more about your business.
Many people consider this to be a “shortcut” to the first page of Google because achieving a first page local listing can be a lot quicker and cheaper than other traditional methods.
Creating and optimizing your local listing is tricky to begin with, but considering it can get your business on the first page of Google, it’s a small price to pay!
If you’re not familiar with all the local ranking factors and want to secure a top 10 local listing for yourself, check out our Guaranteed Top 10 Google Listing program. Our experts will create and optimize your local listing to ensure you’re on the first page of Google when people are searching for you!

The Top 7 SEO Friendly Free CMS Platforms

Posted on 03:34 by Unknown
Before you get started with SEO, you need web content and the foundation of most company’s web content is their website.
Unfortunately most businesses only consider SEO after their website is built which can often be a hindrance to your ranking goals. SEO should be a consideration from the first steps of an online journey – most importantly in the construction of your website.

5. SilverStripe

It’s a modern, powerful and extendable framework for building CMS add-ons and complete web applications. concrete5 features a simple-to-understand but very useful model-view-controller architecture, web helpers classes, powerful file handling, complex users and group permissions.
7. Textpattern
Textpattern is an simple content management system that is free, open source software. It has a powerful, sophisticated engine that can be tuned to suit whatever type of web site you can imagine.
Of course, there are plenty of other CMS options available – and choosing the right one will depend on you having a clear idea of your website needs.
Importantly – whichever option you choose, make sure it is a trusted solution, has extensive support and a strong community and ultimately is easy to use. And of course – make sure it gives you the features to ensure you’re on top of your SEO!

"More Traffic" Newsletter by Secret Search Engine Labs

Posted on 03:31 by Unknown
There's a working unsubscribe link at the bottom of this email!

This time I'm going to talk a little about how to select a domain name that is right for your business.

If you already have a busy website and you like your domain there's no need to change it but as soon as you set up a new website or if you are going to rebrand your business with a new business name you need to consider carefully what domain name to choose.

For those of your who don't know the domain name is the base part of the address you type into the browser address bar to open a website. Like "google.com", "secretsearchenginelabs.com" or "cnn.com"
First of all you need to know what you are going to use the domain for. It could be any of the following.
  • The website of your business.
  • A niche website to make money from ads or selling a ebook
  • A SEO website, like a feeder blog, that exist for the sole purpose of helping your business or niche website rank in the search engines.
Considering the different purposes a domain and website can have your might want to optimize your domain for some but not all of the following
  • A short name that is easy to spell and that people will remember after they have heard someone mention it on the radio or if they read about it two days ago.
  • A name the is built from the nr 1 keyphrase your are targeting with SEO
  •  A name that does not conflict with trademarks or business names already in use in your target market (or you could lose your domain to a trademark holder)
  • A name you want to live with for many years (a lot of your marketing is tied to the domain name)
  • A name without hyphens if possible
  • A .COM or country specific domain for your business
  • A .ORG or country specific domain for your organization

Your Business Website

When your select a domain name for your business, most of the time your want the domain name to be the same as the name of your business.

If you have a long or complicated business name it's usually best to select a domain name that is a short version of your business name, the name of a popular product you sell or a completely new name

Branding is important here and you want a short and memorable name that you remember from the radio or from a billboard.

Always go for a .COM or a country specific domain extension, like .CA or .CO.UK,  for your business.

Use a country specific extension if the large majority of your customers are from a singly country. The country specific extension will help your search engine rankings in that country, but will reduce your rankings in the rest of the world. Many times a country specific extension will make your look more trustworthy in the local market.

Use a .COM extension of you sell to many countries and especially if you sell to the US. The United States country specific extension .US is not popular so avoid it and use .COM

There is a reason to not use .NET domains. Most people only remember the name part of the domain and automatically adds .COM when typing it into the browser address bar. This means you lose a percentage of visitors that go to the .COM domain instead, and if there is something interesting (perhaps a competitor) on the .COM domain they may never return to your hidden .NET business.

If you really want to have a .NET domain make sure to also register the .COM domain with the same name and redirect it the your .NET website. That way you don't lose the type in traffic that uses dot com by mistake.

The same goes for hyphens. Many times your visitors will not remember the hyphen when they type in your domain and you'll lose some visitors again.

Lets talk about domains for SEO and niche websites in a later newsletter.

Also remember to check out my list of best domain name registratin sites if you need a safe place to register your domains.

If you are tired of paying through your nose for security suites that are expensive, RAM-hungry and requires new subscription fees every year, there are plenty of free and tested anti-virus and anti-spyware tools in the web that do the same, if not better, job at protecting your PC as compared to paid versions. Besides well-known free security software like AVG, Spybot and Ad-Aware, here are two more free security tools that protects your PC while saving you money at the same time :

A smart feature, The Delayed Start, lets you delay the launch of non-essential programs for up to an hour after the system boots, enabling Windows to load faster. WinPatrol increases your PC speed and system performance, and by letting you know what programs are and should be running at all times, puts control of your computer back into your own hands.

Security Guide For Microsoft And For Windows Server

Posted on 16:55 by Unknown
Desktop PCs can always be reimaged. It’s a pain, but downtime only affects one person. Servers, on the other hand, need to be up the vast majority of the time. Rebuilding servers affects lots of people, often in mission-critical ways. While most servers don’t spend much time browsing the web or receiving emails, some have quite a bit of exposure.

While every Windows server obviously needs anti-malware protection, terminal servers and others providing virtual desktops or remote access could clearly benefit from the real-time protection promised by Microsoft’s Morro project (now officially known as Microsoft Security Essentials). There are those, in fact, who see it as Microsoft’s responsibility to provide malware protection for all of its products, given their penchant for attracting malicious code.
Unfortunately, MSE is only available for Windows XP, Vista, and 7. No mention of servers. No Googling suggested that server support is in the pipeline. While Clamwin does a perfectly adequate job protecting servers, full-blown server anti-malware solutions aren’t cheap and, again, lack MSE’s near real-time updates.

Then again, would you entrust your mission critical servers to a Microsoft anti-malware solution? Take the survey and talk back below.

Should Microsoft provide a server anti-malware solution?

* Yes! I need to save the money and I want the real-time updates
* Yes they should, but I'd still use a 3rd-party solution
* No, Morro should stay consumer-oriented; I want a robust solution
* Who cares? That's what Clamwin is for

Protect Your PC From Viruses

Posted on 16:52 by Unknown
In the current scenario where computer security issues have come front-and-center for small businesses of all types. And for good reason. Your company's computers contain valuable, irreplaceable data that make them a target for hackers, data thieves and others up to no good.

Keeping your computers and their contents safe and secure is crucial to continued business growth, as well as your personal sanity. A breach in security could be disastrous for you and your company.
Security slips can cause of :

  • Lose precious data
  • Leak company or trade secrets
  • Disclose sensitive customer information
  • Unleash viruses on your computers
  • Lead to unproductive downtime
  • Require time and money to correct

If you do the following following activity, then there is fair chances that your system would be free from virus, spyware or malicious stuffs:

Take Computer Security Seriously
Every business, no matter how small, has computer security needs. If you're operating a network, using email, conducting business through a Web site, using wireless equipment or planning to grow, your security needs can be wide ranging and complex, even for a one-person operation.

Connect with Security Product Vendors Online
A wide range of vendors supply computer security products and services designed specifically for small business.

Get a Firewall
A firewall is a program or hardware device that filters information coming through the Internet to your computer or network. If the firewall detects information that could be destructive to your computers or network, it blocks it. Most small business owners can get by with a software firewall or a firewall that's included in a router (a router is what connects several computers to one modem).

Prevent Viruses
Viruses can clutter your email inbox with virus emails, make your computer run slower than usual and in worst-case scenarios, erase your hard drive.
